about the artist

Hello! My name is Sara Solano, welcome to my website!

My story began May of 2001 in the beautiful city of Medellin, Colombia, where I was born an only child to a lovely mother and family. At the age of 3, my mother’s dreams brought us to the United States where we began a long journey to find our place in this country.

Although I had parted from my birth country and family at a very young age, I hold on to many vivid memories of my joyful childhood there. These memories are so embedded in my brain to this day that many of my academic artworks draw inspiration from Colombia and my relationship to Colombian culture.

My mother and I arrived in New York on a snowy February night in 2005. I can still picture her holding my hand as the flurries of snow gently grace my face and welcome us into this new life of opportunity, hard work, and success. As I grew up, I connected immediately with making art and it very quickly became my favorite hobby!

how it all started

But how did I get into tattooing? Funny enough, when I was about 12 years old, I came across a TV show that flipped a switch in my brain, its name was Ink Master. The rest is history, I was completely obsessed. Whenever teachers or friends used to ask me about my future I would tell them I was going to be a tattoo artist. In my head I was a thousand percent sure I was going to do it. It wasn’t about if I could accomplish my dream, it was about when I would. Thats how Goreycat was born, at 13 years old I had decided my artist name and stuck with it throughout the years, labeling everything I created under it.

As soon as I had done my research on the tattoo industry I began building a portfolio for an apprenticeship, all the while continuing my education. Although pursuing art as a professional career comes with many doubts and fears of failure, in 2019 I officially declared my BA at UAlbany as art history. A year and a half later I was double majoring at Hunter College in Art History and Studio Art. I also began getting tattooed around this time and fell more in love with the process.

Yet, it was during the pandemic that I decided I wanted more from life. I had been working on my portfolio and studying tattoo styles for almost three years and yet the only thing holding me back was fear of rejection! After I realized that it was time for me to start a new chapter of my life, I started searching for anyone willing to take me as an apprentice.

Call it fate, I came across a newly opened shop on Long Island and decided to take a chance and bring the owner my portfolio. That same day, my tattoo journey began! It has been an amazing experience to work along side some of the most talented and creative people i’ve ever met, and I can’t thank them enough for bringing me into their family.

This page is dedicated to my mother, stepdad, boyfriend, and my many wonderful friends and clients who continue to help me fulfill my dreams.
